  • TurboCAT court reporting software (optional)

Realtime

Realtime has always been the core of CAPtivator Online, ever since it was introduced. It supports every major steno keyboard on the market, and has the fastest translation available. It set the standard for customizable phonetic translation, smart word endings, smart line breaks, steno control of live-display, dictionary maintenance, online text globals and dictionary defines, and many other realtime features critical to high-quality live captioning.

Unlike captioning systems that are simply patched together from court reporting software, CAPtivator Online was designed from the beginning as a captioning system. Virtually all important commands are available on the computer keyboard with a single keystroke (no [Control] or [Alt]) so you can hit them with one hand. If you have an assistant working on the system while you write realtime, they can use any function in CAPtivator, and the realtime display area of the screen will be kept clear so you can see what you're doing.

As a realtime captioning system, CAPtivator Online is simply unrivaled.

Live Display (Scripts)

The importance of a good live-display system cannot be overstated. Most news captioning involves some scripted material, as do many speeches, church services, seminars, and even interviews. Our live display system is the best in the business. From its built-in ASCII text editor to its sophisticated story queue manager, CAPtivator Online addresses every need. You can feed scripts, change formats, make global changes, skip lines or stories, search forward and backward, store multiple stories in a file, spread a big story over several files, and much more.

In any captioning environment, there are captions that are used over and over. Credits, for example. The name and motto of a sponsor. An introduction line. Any of these can be defined as a "stock caption," which can be called up by the press of a single key or steno stroke. A stock caption can be a line that pops on the screen, or a file hundreds of lines long. Stock captions can even be defined that insert text into the next script line!

Obviously, the best way to caption a live unscripted event is with realtime and a stenocaptioner. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible. In emergency situations, it might take time to get the captioner online. In a small group or small church, there may not be a backup captioner available if the regular captioner is out sick. CAPtivator Online has the answer.

With electronic notetaking, you type a summary of what is happening that is fed out a line at a time as captions or full-screen text. Even when a stenocaptioner isn't available, a fast typist can still provide a summary of events.

Electronic Notes

Obviously, the best way to caption a live unscripted event is with realtime and a stenocaptioner. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible. Automatic Feed

Not only can CAPtivator Online feed scripts and typed text under your control, it can also be set for automatic operation. A text file can be loaded and sent at any reading rate to any text or caption field. It can even be set to repeat automatically. This is the ideal way to provide summary information in emergency broadcasts, schedules and news in an auditorium or church between sessions, or any other environment where the screen is visible when no captioner is present.

In keeping with the philosophy of CAPtivator Online, this happens without interfering with realtime that may be happening at the same time. For example, you may have realtime captioning for an emergency broadcast going to caption channel 1, while a summary of the emergency with evacuation areas and procedures is set to automatically repeat on text channel 1 at 120 words per minute.

Multilingual Captioning

Captioning today means thinking globally. With CAPtivator Online, you have access to the full character set in the decoders - a fact which has our customers performing realtime captioning in English, French, and Spanish.

The software supports accented letters for words and phrases like ça va, Dónde está usted, à la mode, and mañana. It also handles special characters like 202 or 35.

Since the character generation actually takes place in the television or set top decoder, CAPtivator is limited to the character set supported by those decoders. CAPtivator Online's support of character generators like the Chryon CODI, however, allow for downloadable character sets for greatly increased flexibility in your captioning.

News Captioning

NBC Nightly News

This is where CAPtivator Online began. From the scripts downloaded from Basys or NewStar through the realtime captions, CAPtivator Online is designed to handle the entire newscast. Captioning can be done on-site at the station, or remotely from anywhere in the viewing area (or anywhere in the country, using audio-only connections), with only an encoder and modem onsite.

In an emergency, if the stenocaptioner isn't available, a summary can be typed in and set to auto-feed, or any typist can sit at the console and type a summary of what's going on, which will be output as it is typed.

CAPtivator Online is used for The NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, CBS News, 60 Minutes, CNN, CNN Headline News, other network news shows, and local news at dozens of television stations across the country.

Sports Captioning

In the grueling environment of realtime professional sports captioning, CAPtivator Online provides a comfortable and stable environment for the stenocaptioner. The easy format changes from the steno keyboard allow the captioner to snap the captions from the bottom of the screen to the top (or anywhere else) to avoid covering the action. The lightning-fast translation helps the captioner to keep up with the sportscaster.

For these and many other reasons, CAPtivator Online is used for captioning professional baseball, football, basketball and other sports, for teams like the Oakland A's, San Francisco Giants, Denver Broncos, Portland Trailblazers, Phoenix Suns, and Golden State Warriors, as well as both the summer and winter Olympics.

Captioning Government Proceedings

CAPtivator Online can provide realtime captions both in the City Council Chambers or County offices, and simultaneously on cablecast for the local community access channel. A realtime stenocaptioner can write the full proceedings, with ceremonial items, presentations, and ordinances prescripted and preformatted. CAPtivator Online has even been used in the Canadian Parliament for simultaneous realtime captioning in two languages (English and French).

Additionally, CAPtivator Online can be connected to one or more Total Access stations to allow the clerk, city attorney, and other officials to have the full transcript in realtime available for readback and/or annotation. The clerk can also use this system to note action items and code discussions for later analysis.
